Riding Session Needs

For each individual rider, we need a minimum of three volunteers. This consists of one handler (lead the horse) and two side-walkers (provide support and security for the participant). Additional volunteers also assist with the planned activities (example: playing catch, retrieving equipment), clerical work, equipment clean up, and clean up duty.

Assignments will be based on your comfort level/abilities. We do our best to pair new volunteers with experienced volunteers allowing you to gain comfort and understanding of your role.

Riding Session Duties

  • Check In each session. If designated to work with a specific group, we ask that you notify us if you are unable to attend a session so we can ensure we have enough volunteers.
  • Horse Lead: This individual will help prepare the horse for each session, lead/handle the horse during each session, and assist with clean up.
  • Side-walker: These individuals provide support and security to the rider throughout the session. This may include encouraging the rider, demonstrating exercises/activities, playing games, listening and helping the rider listen and follow directions, assisting rider with social & motor skills, sing songs, and more.
  • Equipment Setup/Take Down: Various volunteers assist with setting up our loading/unloading ramp, check-in/out area, and finding/preparing/cleaning/returning session equipment utilized.
  • Clerical: Checking in riders and volunteers, organizing paperwork as needed, assist with obtaining photos, etc.
  • And more
